Academy #12232 1/48 USN F-4B "VF-111 Sundowners"
The F-4 Phantom was originally designed as an interceptor and air superiority fighter for the US Navy and was capable of speeds of up to Mach 2. It was designed without guns, relying on it's missile armament. Over Vietnam the missiles proved far less reliable than expected so later versions were fitted with an internal cannon and gun pods used in the meantime.
Entering service with the US Navy in 1960, the Phantom went on to be used as a strike aircraft with a heavy bomb load and was major export success being used by many Air Forces and Navies around the world including the USAF, Royal Navy, RAF, Luftwaffe, Japanese Air Force and many more. In the US, it was replaced in the 1980's in Navy service by the F-14 and in the USAF by the F-15. The RAF replaced it's Phantoms with the Tornado F3.
The Phantom is still in service with several Air Forces around the world, the Luftwaffe for example is currently replacing it's last Phantoms with the far more advanced Eurofighter Typhoon. It remains today, the most produced US jet fighter capable of Supersonic speeds and in US service it was the last jet fighter where crews attained ‘ace’ status in air combat.
