nspired by the engineering brilliance of Pagani, the latest Pocher kit is spectacular. If you relish the challenge of a sophisticated model build, make the 1:8 scale Pagani Utopia Coupé model kit your next project.
Our Lead Engineer, George, has got lots to say about this exceptional kit. Read on to find out all about the design process and the direct input from Horacio Pagani himself.
Finding inspiration
Pocher enthusiasts are very vocal about the types of models they think should be awarded model kit status, but there are many things to take into account, including licensing and access to the real car.
That said, the Utopia was high on George’s wishlist.
“The Pagani Utopia Coupé is exactly the kind of model Pocher should be making, it’s Pagani’s third act, and after personally seeing the vehicle up close, it’s so much more refined than previous Pagani models. Truly, it’s a step up for Pagani beyond their own high standards.”
It is the fastidious craftmanship that sets these cars apart. Each one is built by hand, customised to the owner’s specifications. The Pocher experience gives you the unique opportunity to experience something similar, on a 1:8 scale, with every detail replicated in model form. Even the interior is considered, from the hand-stitched leather to the carbon fibre and aluminium accents. You’ll spend several hours on the V12 engine alone!
“The Pagani Utopia Coupé is a perfect candidate for a high-quality model kit because it embodies everything that makes a hypercar extraordinary—bespoke craftsmanship, cutting-edge engineering and breathtaking design.
“We chose this colour, Rinascimento Lucido, as it was the launch colour for the Utopia’s world premiere. Some people have described it as grey or beige, but in reality, it is neither; more similar to a light metallic silver, with a touch of gold, which I personally think looks very elegant.”
The challenges of creating the Pagani Utopia Coupé model kit
Of course, a car as technologically and stylistically advanced as this was never going to be easy to recreate in scale form. George explains:
“I’d say the biggest design challenge for the Pocher Pagani model was the precision and attention to detail needed to capture the hypercar. Incorporating functional features such as movable doors, steering, and suspension adds complexity while demanding structural integrity, as these are largely die-cast and therefore can be quite heavy.
“Assembly is a meticulous process, with hundreds of individual parts requiring careful alignment and hours of dedication to ensure everything fits well, and in a way that is buildable with only a few common tools. Achieving the correct proportions, ride height and body shape is crucial, as even slight inaccuracies could compromise the model’s authenticity. It’s a wonderful reflection of the ingenuity involved in making the Utopia such an icon.”
Pagani-approved design
All our Pocher builds are built with the utmost care and accuracy, but when you are working with one of the world’s most meticulous car creators, the pressure to get it perfect is even more intense! Horacio Pagani was as involved in the design of our Pocher model as he is in his full-sized cars, so we had high standards to live up to.
“We had the unique opportunity to collaborate with Pagani throughout the development of our model, ensuring it lived up to their exceptional standards.
“This process involved multiple rounds of review, where our team carefully refined every detail based on Pagani’s feedback. By maintaining an open dialogue and working together with their experts, we were able to capture the essence of their engineering excellence and craftsmanship.
“The result is a model that not only meets Pagani’s high expectations but also reflects their iconic design philosophy with remarkable precision and authenticity.”
But what was it like to work with a hypercar legend?
“Horacio Pagani is synonymous with exclusive luxury and performance and it was a dream-come-true for Pocher to be able to meet the visionary innovator behind the world-famous Pagani hypercars.
“Observing Horacio at work was a fascinating experience. As the CEO and founder of Pagani Autobili, he’s very close to the engineers on the factory floor but also every detail on every customer car in the factory before they go out.
“Horacio Pagani even hand-signed the first ever Pocher Pagani Utopia Coupé prototype model which is now on display in The WonderWorks.”
Best bits and continuous improvement
As Lead Engineer, George has a few thoughts on what the highlights of this premium scale model kit are.
“The engine bay of the Pagani Utopia Coupé is a true showpiece—crafted with painstaking detail to capture the essence of this hypercar. We’ve poured everything into making it as intricate as possible while keeping the build process exciting and accessible.
“Once it’s all put together, the payoff is incredible. Seeing the model come to life, appreciating the intricate details, and knowing you had a hand in building something so well-engineered is beyond satisfying. It’s not just a replica—it’s a reflection of the artistry and innovation behind an iconic machine.
“However, the interior is also a beautiful sub assembly to model. There are many intricate parts, particularly the gear lever. Every curve, every polished surface speaks volumes about the artistry behind the real vehicle. It’s not just a model—it’s an homage to the automotive artistry that Pagani is, where engineering meets pure craftsmanship. A work of art in every sense.”
That said, the development team are always listening to feedback and looking at areas for improvement.
“To improve future models, we actively analyse and evaluate all customer and model builder feedback at every stage of development and run updates for the instructions online to help builders along.
“This ongoing process allows us to identify common concerns, refine design choices and enhance accuracy while maintaining production efficiency. By incorporating these insights, we can better meet the expectations of collectors and enthusiasts, delivering high-quality models that seamlessly balance artistry, engineering and realism.”
Top model building tips for this premium model kit
With a skill level of 6, this Pocher model is set to keep a few modellers very busy! (Find out more about Pocher skill levels here). But George has a few tips to help you get through some of trickier parts of the build.
Be patient
“The most important principle when assembling a model is patience. As with any detailed construction project - whether it’s furniture assembly or automotive restoration - rushing can lead to misalignment and imperfections in the final product.
Test-fit components
“A careful approach should begin with test-fitting components before committing to final assembly. This ensures that each part aligns correctly and allows for necessary adjustments before securing anything permanently. While the model is designed for assembly with minimal tools, certain sections will require extra attention due to the challenge of fitting numerous small components within a confined space.
Take care with the rear engine lid
“One critical area to focus on is the rear engine lid. Its hinge mechanism is particularly complex, as it moves forward and pivots upward simultaneously. This motion can result in stiffness, which is intentional to help the lid stay in place—but it means careful alignment is necessary during installation.
Watch out for small screws
“Additionally, some screws—especially those in the front suspension—are very small. Applying excessive torque when tightening them can shear them off, so gradual and controlled fastening is recommended to avoid damage.
“Taking your time, following these principles, and working methodically will result in a well-assembled model that properly reflects the craftsmanship and precision of the original vehicle.”
