AFV Club # AF35134 1/35 M1134 STRYKER ANTI-TANK GUIDED MISSILE

AFV35134 -AFV Club

Moving into the 21st Century, the backbone of the armoured forces of US Army is M1A1 MBT, which provides mobile firepower and superior defence capability. Although it is able to surpass most of the opposing armoured fighting vehicles, nevertheless, its 60 ton weight also limits itself in overseas deployment. In some cases, the crew find limitation in urban combat due to its bulky shape.

Mowag Motorwagenfabriken of Switzerland started to develop the Piranha series armoured wheeled vehicles since 1972, and their vehicles are available in many variants.. The US military ordered a batch of Piranha in 1983. The Piranha III was introduced in 1996, and it is able to accomodate a selection of weapons, from 7.62mm machine guns to 105mm guns, in the meantime it can keep total weight under 20 tons and so is transportable in C-120 aircraft. The US Army appreciated this potential and selected the Piranha III as the platform for the next generation of armoured wheeled vehicles.

The new vehicle was named after Stryker who famously sacrificed himself to save his fellow soldiers during the Vietnam War.

The M1134 Anti-Tank Guided Missile Vehicle (ATGM) is a variant of the Stryker family. It is equipped with an elevated 2 tube TOW missile launcher, capable of firing all current types of TOW missiles. The crew of four is under armour at all times. THE ATGM provides maximum crew protection when operated stealthily using terrain and other structures to provide masking and protection.

The M16 Multiple Gun Motor Carriage was developed at White Motor Company based on the undercarriage and hull of the M3 Half-Track Transporter. The M16 vehicle was developed to complement the in-line replacement of the M13 vehicle. Compared to its predecessor, it differed primarily in twice the firepower and slightly better off-road properties. It also used a modernized base for the main armament, designated M45. However, both vehicles - ie the M13 and M16 - used many of the same components and the M13 vehicles still in service were often rebuilt to the M16 standard. Under the designation M17, the car was also exported under the Lend-and-Lease program to the Soviet Union. The M16 vehicles took part in several campaigns of World War II, including: the battles in Italy (1943-1945), during the battles in Normandy in 1944 and in the course of subsequent battles in North-Western Europe in 1944-1945. They were also used against ground targets in the Korean War (1950-1953).
