ICM # 48363 1/48 Black Hawk Down. Operation Gothic Serpent
When ICM first debuted its new-tool 1/48 MH-60L late last year, three words would have instantly entered the minds of helicopter modellers… Black Hawk Down. The phrase is inextricably linked to the H-60 Black Hawk helicopter and popularised by the star-studded 2001 film of the same name (itself based on Mark Bowden’s best-selling book), which told the story of 1993’s Battle of Mogadishu in Somalia.
The battle occurred during what was officially codenamed Operation Gothic Serpent – the attempt to capture Somali rebel leader Mohamed Farrah Aidid. Now the stuff of legend, it was intertwined with a rescue attempt after US Army Black Hawk helicopters were shot down by rebels in Mogadishu, on October 3.
Having also issued UH-60As in US and Ukrainian markings, ICM has now provided what many expected… a new package branded Black Hawk Down – Operation Gothic Serpent (48363). This provides the necessary parts and decals for six US Army MH-60L airframes involved in the events of October 3. The MH-60Ls represented, all from the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, are:
• 91-26324 THUNDERSTRUCK (callsign Super 61)
• 89-26186 RUDE DUDE (callsign Super 62)
• 90-26257 GRIM REAPER (callsign Super 63)
• 89-26188 Venom (callsign Super 64)
• 91-26363 GUN-SLINGER (callsign Super 66)
• 90-26288 RAZORS EDGE (callsign Super 68)
